About Karen

Living with Type 1 Diabetes can make food feel complicated — every meal turns into a math equation, and sometimes the harder you try to “eat perfectly,” the more out of control it feels. Add exercise into the mix, and it becomes a whole new adventure in balancing blood sugars.

I’m Karen Pries, a Physiotherapist and health educator living with Type 1 Diabetes since 2007. For much of that time, I also struggled with binge eating and overexercising — all while trying to maintain a respectable A1C and weight.

Through science, self-compassion, and evidence-based nutrition, I discovered a more balanced way to live — and now I help others do the same.

The Balanced Type grew out of my belief that living well with diabetes isn’t about perfection — it’s about peace, understanding, and balance. Here you’ll find guidance and encouragement to help you build habits that support both your health and your happiness.
